Eat Like a Farmer

When I say ‘eat like a farmer,’ I don’t necessarily mean that you should cook elaborate daily meals. I simply mean incorporating fresh, seasonal produce into your routine, in the simplest and easiest way possible. Like you, we farmers are busy and tired during the week, and often resort to easy, convenient meals. Here are some ways that we incorporate seasonal produce into our eating routines:

RAMEN PLUS

You can really up your ramen game by adding fresh produce. Some of our go-to ramen additions:

Spring Greens
Garlic Scapes & Spring Onions
Mushrooms
Peppers
Hard-boiled or Fried Eggs

PIZZA PLUS

We occasionally make homemade pizza in Bellair’s wood-fired pizza oven. We prefer the Bellair pizza sauce, of course, and whatever produce is in season:

Tomatoes, Mushrooms, Basil, Onions, Peppers…You can even put slices of potato on your pizza (inspired by Crustworthy Pizza). Another creative pizza we’ve made is sweet/savory pizza with Caromont chévre and blueberries.

Don’t have time to DIY your pizza dough? Dress up your frozen or take-out pizza instead! You can also add a simple side salad.

GRAIN BOWLS

Grain bowls are easy, versatile, and incredibly wholesome. Prep your base (rice, quinoa, millet, etc), veggies/toppings and dressing, mix it all together, and enjoy! Here are some seasonal suggestions:

Spring - lots of fresh greens, garlic scapes, spring onions, fennel, radishes. Miso-Lime-Ginger dressing is a great addition
Summer - cucumbers, tomatoes, peaches, bacon for a BLT Bowl
Fall - roasted pepper, sweet potatoes, fresh apples, chévre, a lean Denver steak
Winter - butternut squash, pork sausage, roasted/stewed apples

OPEN-FACED SANDICHES

Open-faced sandwiches are one of my favorite things - easy to make, delicious, and so pretty to look at! The variations are endless and it can be made fresh or with a combo of leftovers for a super quick lunch, dinner, or even breakfast! Recently, I made a Spring variation with pesto, ricotta, sautéed mushrooms and roasted radishes (shown here.)

Other seasonal variations include the BCT (Bacon, Cabbage, & Tomato) and Winter Squash Toast.

You don't need to be a chef for local food to taste great and nourish your body. Pairing our veggies with instant ramen, takeout, boxed mac and cheese.... it all works! Especially this time of year when everything is great for fresh eating. Of course, fancy food is great once in a while, but just know that however you enjoy our food, we appreciate you as a customer and supporter of the farm!
