Make Bird Suet with Lard
This is a fun Winter project for the bird lovers out there, and also a fun project to do with kids. Big thank you to Donna (aka Michelle's mom) for making this tutorial and testing out the recipe.
Ingredients:
Pork Lard or Beef/Lamb Tallow
Mixed Bird Seed
[Optional] Peanut Butter - we suggest all natural, no added sugar or palm oil.
Supplies:
Large Pot for rendering lard
Rimmed Cookie Sheet
Parchment Paper
Large Spoons and/or Tongs
Making Bird Suet is pretty simple. Assemble the above supplies, and then start by slowly rendering your fat in a large pot.
While you're waiting, line your cookie sheet with some parchment paper. Binder clips help keep the parchment in place.
Once the fat is fully rendered, remove any cracklin's and let it cool slightly before adding your bird seed (not cooled enough to solidify). Add your bird seed to the lard and stir well. Carefully spoon or pour your fat/seed mixture into the cookie sheet. You may want to stir it up a little to evenly distribute the seed. The fat will need to fully set up before you cut and remove it from the pan. Do this overnight and/or in the fridge. Once it has fully solidified, cut to the appropriate size and use your suet in your bird feeder! We suggest storing extra suet blocks in the fridge to keep them fresh.
